Orillia Community Fest
A day of food, music, dance and friendship that started small and became something the whole city turns out for. Free to attend, run by volunteers, and open to everyone in Orillia.
Diversity Holiday Gala
An evening honouring the communities that enrich Simcoe County, and a rare room where Orillia’s diversity is the guest of honour rather than a footnote.
Black History programming
From the first Black History Awareness Week at Georgian College’s Orillia campus to community programming across the city, built so young people can see themselves in local history.
Newcomer and family support
The quiet work between events: connecting families to resources, mentorship and people who have already made the same journey. This is the part that never makes the paper.
The County of Simcoe named her a Community Champion.
In October 2022 the County of Simcoe presented Alasoba with the Community Champion Award at its tenth annual Newcomer Recognition Awards, recognizing her contribution to community building and belonging in the region. She was five years into her life in Canada.
